'She Asked Me To The Dance Floor'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '25th January 2019'

Our Rating:
I don’t often like to talk about it, but hailing from Lincoln myself, and having been in a band for a time the story in District Motion’s bio about playing a band competition in Scunthorpe reminds me of my trip to Scunthorpe to play a battle of the bands. Thankully, there was a decent PA and a decent turnout, and we got a rave review and even a photo in the local paper.

But that was circa 92 and the 400-capacity Baths Halls. I’m not so sure of the scene in the county now, especially not Scunthorpe, and the tale of playing to one man who walked out leaving his pint seems entirely plausible. Sadly, it’s how it is in the lower echelons of the music industry. I wonder if they’ve ever played the Axe & Cleaver in Boston to three people and a dog the size of a horse?

District Motion, with ‘sales, downloads and YouTube views in over 75 countries’, not to mention boasting a catalogue of ‘four EPs, 25 singles and over a dozen videos on YouTube’ as well as support from BBC Introducing, may justifiably claim to be ‘Lincolnshire’s biggest band’. I’m going to assume they mean currently, given that a Smooth FM survey shows Nicola Roberts to be Lincolnshire’s most successful artist

The blurb which accompanies the release explains that ‘She Asked Me To The Dance Floor’ is ‘a song written in the tempo and style of the 1940s allowing people to dance the Lindy Hop (a post 2nd W.W. dance) which is still danced at dances and classes throughout Britain and Europe today. To my ears, ‘She Asked Me To The Dance Floor’ melds lifts of ‘What She Said’ by The Smiths with a hefty dose of Arctic Monkeys and vintage rock ‘n’ roll. It’s not bad, but it’s the band’s energy that makes it.
