Review: 'Bilge Pump'
'We Love You'

-  Label: 'Gringo Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '15th February 2019'

Our Rating:
Leeds perennials Bilge Pump are the band responsible for the record with possibly the best title in the entirety of my 2,000+ strong accumulation of records, with 2010’s 10” ‘The Fucking Cunts Still Treat Us Like Pricks’, which even betters Swans’ ‘Public Castration is a God Idea’ and is rather more listenable, too. ‘We Love You’ is their first release since then, and their first album in 11 years.

If you’re already familiar with Bilge Pump, ‘We Love You’ sounds like Bilge Pump, combining the elements of post-punk, skewed indie and jazz to forge something that sits somewhere between The Fall and prog rock as filtered through the lo-fi leanings of early Pavement. Vintage bedroom indie with loping rhythms provide the perfect blend of jangle and jolt, all played with an underlying sense of chaos.

If you’re not already familiar with Bilge Pump, the combined elements of post-punk, skewed indie, and jazz may seem like a challenging collision of disparate, discordant elements. Which of course, is precisely what it is. And that’s why it’s cool.
