A mix of curiosity and dread is my instinctive response to an album pitched as ‘instrumental progressive fusion rock.’ But curiosity gets the better of me. I figure that any band comprising members with names like Total Devastation, Demonic Death Judge, and Kreyskull must have some sense of humour.
As one would likely expect, there are lots of twists and turns and mathy noodles, and at times it’s all extremely busy, with jazz chords and complex time signatures. What one may not necessarily expect are some nice chuggy riffs and chiming post-rock cadences. So while there is no shortage of flamboyant fretwork and musical showiness, the extravagant extremities are at least tempered at critical points by direct and focused segments.
