Review: 'Survival Code, The'
'Crosses to Carry, Coffins to Fill'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '16th August 2019'

Our Rating:
The Survival Code are Dubliner Gary McGuinness (vocals / guitar) and drummer Simon Hartop. They’ve been championed by Kerrang!, Classic Rock, Rock Sound and a bunch of others, and they’re mighty pleased with this, the follow-up to their 2018 album ‘Hopelessness of People’, which got the W&H vote this time last year, with Gary commenting on how it ‘mixes all the catchiness and impact of the last album and blends that with our energy packed style which we always bring live’.

‘Innocent’ is definitely catchy – to the point of being commercial pop with guitars. By way of an opener, it hints at a more overtly mainstream direction, and the EP as a whole has a certain lightness to it that risks undermining both the band’s rock credentials and the lyrical content.

There’s some widdly lead guitar work thrown over their solid, chuggy riffs, but these are placed well behind the vocal melodies which dominate the mix. I’d never equate poppy with weak in itself, but this is kinda poppy and a bit weak, and against ‘HoP’, it does feel if not exactly weak, then tame.
