'And Inside'

-  Label: 'Sound In Silence'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '1st July 2020'-  Catalogue No: 'sis074'

Our Rating:
The clunkily named [.que] is the solo project of Japanese multi-instrumentalist Nao Kakimoto, based in Tokyo.

This is his eleventh full length album and his second release on the diy label based in Athens, Greece after Wonderland in 2017. It comes in a limited edition of 300 handmade, hand-numbered and hand-stamped copies packaged in a cobalt blue cardboard envelope.

The record consists of ten tracks with one word titles with a total duration of about 35 minutes.

Acoustic instruments blend with electronic textures to create what is awkwardly summarized as "gorgeous twinkly folktronica, joyful dream-pop and elegant post-rock".

I don't think 'twinkly' is quite the right adjective but there is a lightness of touch that make these tunes the opposite of sober minimalism or cinematic ambience. It's no great surprise to learn that Kakimoto has previously composed music for TV commercials, movies and exhibitions.

The breezy optimism of the pieces would make them perfect accompaniments for travel photo montages or as soundtracks to videos of exotic locations.
