Australian Legends The Apartments are back with a new album, having been around since 1978 this is part of the bands slow and consistent continuation of Peter Milton Walsh's musical vision. Of course for a very brief minute Peter Milton Walsh was in The Go-Betweens before he realized he had a different musical vision to pursue.
The album opens with the single Pocketful Of Sunshine that actually sounds rather grey and rainy as they hope for a little ray of sunshine to lift the mood of this slowly strummed almost chamber folk that's hopeful that things might be better soon. As the trumpet signals the coming better days.
Peter Milton Walsh's vocals remind me of Trevor Sensor quite a bit although I'm sure it's the other way around.
Write Your Way Out Of Town is downbeat and just wants you to hold on and not give up in a slow deliberate way as you might want to give in to the pleading nature of this song mainly as you'll be impressed by its stark beauty.
Were You Used To Be feels almost like they have tried to strip back the sound that Spiritualized have on Ladies and Gentleman as rather than 100 instruments creating a huge sound this is done here with maybe four of five instruments and yet it still feels like they are enveloping you with the love and care to get you back.
What's Beauty To Do is a very Prefab Sprout type pop song this sounds like it could be a bit of a creeper hit as it will worm it's way into your head and needs to be heard on daytime radio.
Butterfly Kiss is the first song that I've heard that references the good old days of 2010 and wanting to be back in this "halcyon days" before the trauma that happened since and the broken relationships over sparse chamber pop that will have many of us wishing we were back in 2010 once more as it does indeed feel like a golden age compared to 2020 that's for sure so let them sing through the summer for you again.

We Talked Through Till Dawn should be heard with a glass of red wine as the regrets, that you talked all night, about the person that walked away and you get all maudlin and sad and need a lone trumpeter to try to heal your broken heart with this gentle balm of a song.
I Don't Give A Fuck About You Anymore is a super lush chamber pop song of bitter twisted hate for the ex you really want and need to be totally out of your life for good, without the Fuck this would be perfect for daytime airplay, but the shock of the swear word in a song as lush and beautiful as this makes it a brilliant move.
The album closes with The Fading Light that almost feels like it's re-working the theme to Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence into a bleak piano led rumination of the end of a relationship and of someone feeling there life is over at the age of 33.
