This new EP from Matthew Edwards finds him switching his backing band from The Unfortunates to the Futurists and hopefully they won't have some of the problems the original Futurists did. This Ep is a good follow up to last years excellent The Birmingham Poets.
This Ep opens with The Falls that has an almost Chamber folk feel to it with sparse percussion and a quite intense guitar part as Matthew sings about the events that lead him down to The Falls in a way that's almost like Nick Drake's Northern Sky being reworked as a prog-folk song.
First Song Of The Revolution (Even Better Mix) is almost a clarion call for anyone in California to rise up and throw over the regime, although this doesn't sound as angry as that might imply as this has a folk pop feel to it to gently bring about the change we need.
Jesus apparently liked the cut of Matthews jib, as he tries to ward away his loneliness over a slow piano backing as he worries he may end up on a funeral pyre if he isn't careful, this song questions belief and seems to wonder that faith is really about.

Marin County is a lament for lost love and his love has fled for Marin County and rather than being where you might go for a day trip from San Francisco this feels more like a more permanent split and he's still trying to figure out how to move on, over some gently questioning folk that could almost be strummed by a busker at the foot of the Golden Gate bridge as you look across the bay.
