Mark Lanegan describes this as an EP of ‘jack-hammering, oldschool style hardcore tunes’ – and he’s spot on. A 7” EP containing four tracks which clock in with a total running time of under 7 minutes.
The buzz of the release comes tinged with a down-key element since founder member Steve Hanford, formerly of Poison Idea, having approached Tony Avila with a view to forming a band that was ‘Poison Idea mixed with The Accused’, died of a heart attack in May, aged 50 before work came to fruition.
However, with Steve’s drums already down, along with bass track courtesy of Nick Oliveri, Avila was able to complete work by drafting in Mike Williams and Blaine Cook.
For all the time it’s taken, and all the strife surrounding its creation, ‘Crush The Machine’ is a perfectly focused release that fires on all cylinders, frenzied, fast and furious. The guitars are a blur, the drumming is explosive, the lyrics are spat and yelled so fast as to e indistinct beyond the conveyance of fury. And there’s no shortage of things to be furious about. D.E.A (that’s Dead End America) and hardcore punk are unlike to change that but at least they provide the cathartic conduit by which to feel better about it all for a time.
