Review: 'Blue Statue'
'VF'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '23rd October 2020'

Our Rating:
They’re pitched as one of the most exciting new bands on the London rock scene today, and we’re recommended to file next to IDLES, The Wedding Present, early-Idlewild, The Fall. This isn’t only a somewhat awkward cross-section, but also the worst example of alphabetisation I’ve seen in a long time.

While I’m not really hearing any of the aforementioned in the skewed grunge-oriented guitar blast of leader ‘V.F.’, what I am hearing is some powerful energy, the melodic verses yielding to an explosive chorus and swerving off on various tangents that remind us that 90s alt rock was more than just a quiet / loud template and at its best pushed structural boundaries and was genuinely exciting. Because yes, Blue Statue’s sound is very much modelled on that 90s sound and style, but ventures beyond Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ and points as much toward The Pixies and a slew of lesser-known acts of the time who encapsulated the zeitgeist in a way that ran deeper than those who broke through the surface into the mainstream. These are all good things, and this kicks ass, as Beavis and Butthead would have said.
