'Merry Xmas Everybody'

Our Rating:
It's the monument that keeps on giving, a 12" single that will always be capable of getting a Xmas party going slightly mad for it, no matter how curmudgeonly I try to be, playing this record it has me grinning from ear to ear for most of the time, as well as evoking some serious memories of Xmas parties gone by during the 49 years since it first came out. This re-issue is as a 12" single on Snowflake marble vinyl as the single from the also re-issued Slade The Christmas Party Album Crackers.

The A-side opens with the xmas monument to end all monuments, this side of the 12" single should be deployed once everyone is well on the way to being very merry, full of Mince pies, eggnog, Xmas Pudding and mulled wine, as the dancefloor fills and everyone starts Bawling along with this old chestnut. This 12" single has a very clean warm embrace of a mix.

The dj should then just let the single play on as the already packed dancefloor enjoys this classic stomp along version of Let's Dance, the Jim Lee penned, Chris Montez classic, Slade originally put there version out in 1988 having recorded it in 1985, this version is produced by Jim Lea. The Slade version is perfect to have a rocking rave up on the dancefloor too. It has a great fairground organ with guitar's romping along revving up the party goers.

The b-side of the 12" single should be played as the last three songs of your xmas disco, a service they performed at many many Xmas parties I attended over the years. First up to fill the dancefloor and bring a healthy dose of skinhead punk madness is Slade's take on the Okey Cokey played live of course, this gets faster and faster and more manic as it goes, getting properly hairy before the false endings bring this to a panting out of breath conclusion.

You need the first slow Bagpipe led part of Auld Lang Syne to recover a bit and as the song mutates into You'll Never Walk Alone, as the band comes in and everyone's arms are raised aloft shouting along with them, so that when it goes back to the full on glam stomping part of Auld Lang Syne everyone is ready to go mental for one last time, before they can all kiss hug and say goodnight at the end of another blast of an Xmas party.
