Review: 'GRYLUSS, ÁBRIS & DÁVID SOMLÓ'
'Every Day'

-  Label: 'Warm Winters Ltd'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '31st March 2023'

Our Rating:
The global trauma caused by Covid will take many years to fully assimilate. Quite apart from the tragic loss of life, the impact on people of all ages has been, and continues to be, profound.

There are currently a steady stream of releases conceived, remodelled and completed during lockdown,

One can add to this list ‘Every Day’, an ambitious and quietly disturbing 40 minute collaborative piece by two Hungarian contemporary composers who boldly attempt to render the disorientating and mournful experiences of the pandemic into a musical form.

Inevitably, the atmosphere is sombre. As a self-proclaimed ”document of grief, how could it not be?

The work was conceived as an installation and premiered at the 2022 edition of Budapest Autumn Festival with the aim of facilitating deep contemplation and reflection.

Repetitive tolling of bell-like timbres resonate as funereal drones which seem to mark the slowing down of time itself.

This work could conceivably be construed as a call to prayer, albeit one which offers very little in the way of solace.
