Review: 'MILES, MAGGIE'
'The Lack Thereof'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '17th May 2023'

Our Rating:
Nashville based ‘alternative’ artist Maggie Miles’ sophomore release promises ”instantly memorable soulful pop vocals which ruminate on the shifting nature of self.”

Maggie is a 23-year old pastor’s daughter from Northern Virginia but at 16 she discovered acts like Nirvana and Alice In Chains who are not especially known for advocating a life of religious diligence Miles is striving to find her own brand of faith and redefining her relationship with God and herself.

On the lead single, Asthma, she sings “I'm pretty sure I learned my lesson,I can tell,'cause I feel different.”

The blurred image on the album cover was taken at age 18 while on a car ride with friends through the Appalachian Mountains and she says reflects a turning point in her life.

Momentum is about feeling the inclination to change and grow independently of others - ”I'm the only one that's in the way.” In the video for the song we see her literally breaking free of the ties that bind and running from a creepy figure in a forest. Quite how she intends to shalke her demons is not clear but she's clearly on the right path towards discovery.

These are big 90s productions that aspire to be power ballads. The sound straddles pop and rock with the former being more prominent.

Her debut was called ‘Am I Drowning Or Am I Learning To Swim’, a title of self-doubt if ever there was one. Where that album posed questions, this follow-up actively seeks answers.
