Our Rating:
Star City Survivor is an Avant Garde improv project from Phil Venable on guitar and Tommy Jackson on Drums recorded by Todd Warner and mixed by Mike Nicholson in Chapel Hill North Carolina.

This opens with Empty And Burning And Empty that I'm sure will make some listeners want to actually burn it, as they won't get this sort of Avant Garde improv noodling guitar, over oddly out of whack drum fills, as it goes on it gets more desperate sounding as ideas clash and minds are cleared, it eventually recedes to almost nothing on the outro.

Transmitter Malfunction opens it's 13 minutes with the sounds of someone pushing plugs into and out of amps, the gentlest percussion and odd guitar squiggle, at times it sounds like they are tuning, trying to get the right sound rather than playing an actual piece. This would work as the soundtrack for a dark room experience as the various sounds jump out at appropriate and inappropriate points. Eventually it begins to fill in the gaps and the guitar becomes more focused with several interesting runs set against the almost be-bop drum breaks alternating with cymbal washes. This all builds to a quite mad intense sequence of emissions.

Broken Navigation could easily be the soundtrack to trying to get round London these days as our cities ever more broken road system becomes more labyrinthine by the day with more dead ends and blockages, as the snare tries to navigate its way round the menacing guitar indentations worming its way towards its destination, if it can figure out where its going or how to get there, it takes a few wrong turns on the way with almost an indicator sound that keeps repeating.

The Sun Is A Ball Of Hate sounds like the reply to any number of sun Ra tunes about the Sun from the frantic drums, exploratory guitar trying to explode those Sun Spots, channeling the hatred as it burns everything in its vicinity. Distinctly visceral elucidations fire against the realms of the sun worshippers help to bring this improvised free jazz album to a suitable nutty conclusion.
