Review: 'LOGANSTONE'
'SOONER NOT LATER (EP)'

Our Rating:
Hailing from Sarf London, LOGANSTONE are brought to us by the management team responsible for Brendan Benson and Howie Payne's The Stands and are the very essence of immediacy on this debut three track EP.

Their bio suggests their influences are diverse, and while I don't hear the likes of David Bowie and The Pixies from their collective wishlist in here, the likes of Air and Happy Mondays do fit the bill. The EP opens with the title tune, and it's a winning combination of studio tech and organic live ensemble playing. Bright, poppy and catchy, with the vocals flourishing from a whisper to a scream effortlessly when the chorus looms in view and Air apparent in the track's floaty danceability.

The modestly-titled "We Were Incredible" takes up the baton with a melody set by a loping bassline and subtle breakbeats and accentuated by lazy, fork-tongued slide guitar a la Happy Mondays. The U2-ish ringing guitars buoy up what is potentially a very big sound with elements of ye olde indie/rock crossover but in a modern context.

Final track "So Loud" kicks in with a surefire finger-picked acoustic guitar figure and comes on all dancey in a groovebound Charlatans-meet-Ambershades kinda way. The swampy, farty synth is a good idea, and the fruity organ and nimble playing are well developed and it's all very radio friendly and mainstream without getting horrible or cloying.

It's early days for Loganstone, but "Sooner Not Later" is a confident start by a band who seem like they mean business. The future is theirs to write on should they so desire.
