Review: 'Port Sulphur'
'Meta Guru'

-  Label: 'Last Night From Glasgow'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '4.10.24.'

Our Rating:
Meat Guru is the latest album by Port Sulphur who are one of the many bands led by Douglas Mackintyre from the legendary Creeping Bent Organisation, guests on the album include Vic Godard, Davy Henderson, Paul Research and James Kirk. Douglas is currently also in Quad 90 and Cowboy Mouth.

The album opens with Caleno a riff based instrumental, with loads of synths swirling around the central riff, it's indie synth pop and immensely catchy.

Fast Boys & Factory Girls has the titled repeated generously by Vic Godard and Davy Henderson through this fast-paced groove of indie synth rock, the differing vocals add a slight twist to a song in love with Warhol's factory and the characters you'd find there.

Valentino's slows things down a bit, this has darker twists around a drum machine pattern with odd ambient textural synths, that suddenly has a more dancefloor shift, the pace quickens as the funky guitar break arrives, so the backing singers can swoon along with it.

Bill Nelson isn't about his discovery of Whitney Houston or the search for Red Noise, this is more mid-tempo semi funky song using some gritty Material to get to the nub of things.

Tomorrow-Tomorrow uses what could be a Joy Division bass line to great effect, the drum machines work around it, the synths build up layers of musical intrigue, while the guitar soars through it all.
Exploding Clockwork is the first real song, that opens the B-side, this glorious psyche pop tune has them losing their minds, the drugs have hit and all around they see Exploding Clockwork in western towns, with synths used like pulsar guns, firing off weirdness through the deeply groovy riff that drives this on.

The Lane was one of the singles from the album, a catchy indie pop song for a couple of lovers strolling down The Lane, hoping to find what they are looking for, good times and some meaning. Orient Express has funky guitar with slinky indie pop for hopping on that train.

Meta Guru the album's title track is less Bolan boogie and more sharply observed indie pop, that does re-work the Bolan chorus delightfully, the bass gets darker, but this lacks the skintight silver pants and glitter make up, but does have a super groovy instrumental outro.

The album closes with a cover of Josef K's It's Kinda Funny the slowest tune on the album, this is stripped back full of regrets and has an air of sadness about it, a wonderful version of this classic Postcard tune.
