Our Rating:
Aztlan Unearthed is the new album by the Indigenous focussed acoustic group who are also involved in Aztlan and The Anahuak Underground musical collective, The group consists of Yaotl Mazahua, Joe Galarza and Caxo, the album was produced and mixed by Carlos Ninos at the legendary KPFK Studios. The album is being released ahead of Indigenous Peoples Day on October 14th. The band explain where the music is coming from on the making of video below.

The album opens with Welcoming Of The Bird People with a speedy drum pattern and bird call flute, this is perfect to chant along too, opening up to the myriad possibilities of this spiritual music.

Windsong Giver has a very Shofar sounding horn being chased by galloping drums, calling out to control the coming winds, so you may survive intact, if you chant the message out the wrong way, the wrath of the winds will descend upon you, I hear the shofar blown at this time of the year, this feels like Tekiah and Shevarim are as revered in the ancient Aztlan culture in similar ways to the mystical Jewish calls.

Awakening Flower Earth has heavy tribal drumming and wood block sounds with some super fluid flute, to help aid your thanks for the sun rising on another day on earth.

In The Caves Of The Heart takes flute lines, like birdsong, seeking to open up your emotions, drum beat slowly asks questions of your deepest emotions, shakers add poignancy to the musical discourse, going through several phases that give a clue to the rollercoaster of emotions hidden in those caves.

The Wind Is Our Song From Below is bewitching call and response between the flute and drum, tree branches clash, leaves are falling, but the message is delivered.

To Walk In All Beauty sounds like it was recorded in the middle of a rain storm, rain patters down, atmospheric drones begin to cut through, almost buried flute line emerges and submerges, before tonal shifts, like whale sounds, chimeric visions emerge, shakers increase like your sitting in a circle deep in the forest, taking all the sounds in around you, birds chirruping, Messages sent through tonal bells, the forest is ever changing, they move, the trees rustle, storm clouds threaten, rain that ever persistent rain returns.

The bonus tune that is only on the vinyl version of the album is Aetheriatzlan featuring special guest Jesse Patterson and producer Carols Nino who help create a trance like ethereal soundscape, messages being sent to outer space, portals being opened, mind expanding meditations, let the ancient spirits burn, smoke opening minds floating towards the fading call.
