Review: 'Speed Of Sound, The'

Our Rating:
Manchester indie pop band The Speed Of Sound are back with the final part of the bands A Cornucopia trilogy. This long running bands current line-up is John Armstrong, Ann-Marie Crowley, Kevin Roache, John Broadhurst, Henry Armstrong, Bob Dinn, Chris Guest and Alex Armstrong on Typewriter.

The album opens with the reflective piano intro to Virtual Reality 123 as the guitars sound like whale calls, it gives way to an indie pop song of the dangers and misgivings the dawning of the Virtual Reality 123 age brings.

Artificial Paradise works over a jaunty guitar line, the peril of modern artificiality is explored, fraught with danger for where we seem to be headed.

Jaunt is almost a dance craze you all need to join in, with the brass flourishes signalling more new wave movements, so come on everybody let's Jaunt.

Radio Safe is what you hope you are, while not wanting to be, downhearted vocals are dismayed at hearing all the same old hits again, how will they get their songs played, if they don't hang the virtual DJ.

Keep It Quiet don't say a word to disrupt the status quo, keep your head down and let the glorious backing vocals take over.

The Melancholy Rose is somewhat subdued invocation to a loner in need of direction from a blackbird.

No Kicks, no fun, no good times left, in the malaise of these times, what will she do to change things other than sounding like The Sundays.

Replicant are you real or just a Replicant, stuck to your all controlling phone, wearing the uniform of the day, just another drone, the guitar solo jumps you awake once more.

Glide On By won't you just go beyond us disappear into the next place so far away from here.

The album closes with Charlotte 12" version that has Burundi style drumming with ethereal vocals leading into this tale of what happened to Charlotte, was she ready for it, well listen and find out.
