Bloody hell, that's a big one.
I'm referring, of course, to the blade being brandished by AVIATOR SHADES' singer/ bassist Graham Gold on the inner sleeve of the band's new single. Crikey. Now that's what I call persuasive!
But then these Glasgow boys have no need to reinforce the message with strong-arm tactics as their edgy, thrusting power-pop is alluring enough in its' own right. Released on their own label, Broken Records, "The Money Shot" and "Nice Day For A Breakdown" are both hefty but intelligent slabs of musclebound pop which get to the point without anyone having to end up face down in the canal.
Both tunes are potential killer singles actually. "Here Comes The Money Shot" is nicely taut'n'angular in the guitar department and the band are smart, wiry and well-drilled. Fame, greed, lust an insecurity are all on the agenda and Graham Gold has both the chiselled, Paul Westerberg-style looks and the gutsy vocal delivery to be convincing. Your reviewer is also impressed by the way the shadowy backing vocals follow him around. This is thoughtful, moody pop at its' best.

"Nice Day For A Breakdown", meanwhile, is an easily-digestible comment on our crass consumer society ("I want a big house, I want a big car, don't want a credit card 'cos baby I want you") allied with a grinding, gnarly, junior Stones-y swagger. It's an edgy, gluttonous slice of no-wave pop that sounds fine any time at all.
An impressive pair of tracks from a fine young quartet, then. Meanwhile, new tunes have since been recorded with Deckard's Chris Gordon (a man who intrinsically understands this heavy, edgy pop lark himself) and are all set to go come 2005. So listen up: Aviator Shades are tinged with darkness and danger and will be making a big noise in the next 12 months or so.
