This album has such an oppressive mood that it’s like wandering into a dark tunnel with only a slim possibility of emerging into the light 42 minutes later.
The title track and opening song is a menacing piano ballad in which half sung, half spoken vocals are like those of a serial killer. This is followed by Blind (released as a single) in which a grinding metal loop accompanies some obscure lyrics about pain and love .
On Goodbye Man there’s a repeated plea of “No more” as though begging someone to make the suffering stop. But the unsettling feeling of impending disintegration and decay never really lifts.
”Lark is an unsound sound” runs the PR and of that there can be little doubt. They are a London band fronted by founder Karl Bielik and this is their 7th album.
The cause of all this existential grief is not entirely clear. It’s like a horror movie without a monster. There is something out there lurking in the shadows.
Lyrics partly deploy the William S. Burroughs cut-up technique so are more likely to obscure meaning than to provide answers.
