Our Rating:
The Westbound Sound: Foundations is the second Record Store Day album compiled from songs suggested by participating record store employees, The album focusses on some of the most heavily sampled tunes in the Westbound Records catalogue, from the labels days as one of the key Funk and disco labels in Detroit.

The A-side opens with Pack Of Lies by The Counts some prime time, floor filling, brass led funk with some wonderfully intricate guitar interplay against the all-encompassing brass section.

Ecstasy by Ohio Players is every bit as libidinous as they can make it, this is bedroom funk of the dirtiest kind, they provide the rhythms and yelps for some full on loving to that massive organ sound.

Love's Now Is Forever by Fuzzy Haskins who may have found the one that will stop him from carrying on, partying all night long, all the brass musicians in the world are ready to blow horns in celebration, for what he sees in you, other than being a key member of Parliament-Funkadelic of course.

Well, Have A Nice Day by King Errisson sounds like it's the intro to a blaxploitation movie, the lyrics form the outline of how this love story may work out, will he get her to bend to his will or not. Will she believe all his lines or not.

Funk It Down by Cesar Frazier this is a lazy laid-back funk work out for someone who is taking their time to Funk It Down properly, while he waits for Marvin Gaye to call him back into action.

The B-side opens with Music Man (Part 2) by Pleasure Web some fine flute funk, with some mighty funky wah wah guitar and cool brass stabs.

Pain (Part 1) is the second Ohio Players tune on the album and is the aftermath, when your loving is no longer wanted and that blowsy brass section is following you down the road again, Pain of separation is tearing you apart, he begs and pleads for just one more chance. The way the pied piper plays the flute just before the orgasmic yelps on the outro is chilling.

Nappy Dugout by Funkadelic has that oh so sampled bassline intro, to this stone-cold groove.

Suzie Thundertussy by Junie Morrison is a dark sleazy funk monster, with Bee Gees style backing vocals, Junie tells this wicked tale of exploitation and desire from the Ohio Players and Parliament-Funkadelic musical arranger.

The album closes with Mixed Up Moods And Attitudes by Fantastic Four the Motown superheroes, of disco soul funk loveliness, who are begging and pleading for your love, they have finally worked up the strength to let them know just how much they want you next to them. Go on say it straight, don't keep changing your mind.
