Review: 'CROSSWORD SMILES'
'Consequences & Detours'

-  Label: 'Big Stir Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '23rd May 2025'

Our Rating:
Calling Tom Curless and Chip Saam “power pop veterans” is to concede that they are not still in the first flush of youth.

The music Michigan-based duo make is nevertheless full of jaunty hooks and breezy melodies about levity, opportunity and uncertainty.

Songs are structured around jangly guitars but are ornamented by violin, synths, accordion, trumpets , harpsichord and e-bow. None of these additional instruments are strictly essential but they add some width to the core sound .

The vibe is very 1980s; the mood is broadly optimistic.

It would sound good on a car radio.

It’s likeable but lightweight.
