Review: 'Supernaturals, The'
'Show Tunes'

-  Label: 'Last Night From Glasgow'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '2.5.25.'

Our Rating:
Show tunes in the seventh album by 90's brit pop band The Supernaturals and is dedicated to the memory of original guitarist Derek McManus who passed away in 2022. The bands current line-up is James McColl, Gavin Crawford, Mark Gurthie, David Currie and Joe Greatorex.

The album opens with Don't Let The Past Catch Up With You that feels like the past really has caught up with The Supernaturals, they are stuck in 1986/7 at an indie club listening to the latest jangle pop, while dreaming of making it big in the 90's, the feelings they describe of not holding on to bitterness at things not working out, and putting those feeling in a drawer make a lot of sense.

We Were On Fire has a laid-back hazy feel, looking back at the days when they were the next big thing and were totally on fire, on everyone's tip sheet, the du jour support band, oh to bring those days back again, with this sophisticated string laden indie pop.

Early single Roy Wouldn't has an obvious lineage back to the 1960's and revolves around some very familiar chords and vocals that seem to have mainlined Macca.

She Is The Reason is a slow carefully sung song of love and lust for the woman he wants to be his for eternity; While mocking his younger self for how horrified they would have been at such schmaltzy sentimentality.

Of Human Bondage is thankfully not as boring as Somerset Maughan's book, this starts slow and it picks up the pace, has a nice upbeat feel to the drama within.

Clockwork Orange is thankfully not set in the wastelands of Thamesmead and the awful Belmarsh Prison, this is more wistful reminiscence of love gone awry, without any skinheads cutting your dress off my droogy, because this is set in Govan. The synths towards the outro have a cool analogue feel.

Del Gato has a rumbling funky beat with casio keyboards and brass over the top, some cool tambourine shakes and rather laconic backing vocals.

Turn It Around is hopeful that you can get everything back in its proper place and your love will continue to bloom, despite all the fractures and breaks you'll make it through if you put the effort in.

If You Can't Love Yourself is the eternal question for those who never seem to find happiness, due to all the self-hatred, they hate themselves so much they want to sound like Macca again.

The single Burn The Witch has the heaviest guitars on the album, it's unclear which witch they want to burn, so many choices, but the anger and bile they feel is real, they are ready to go into the pyre building business.

Spirit seems to have sent them into a torpor, this is downbeat sad reflections, hoping you might get your Spirit back. Killed By Submarines may torpedo your expectations, this underwater battle gets going, sonar baiting guitars rail away. This should be played alongside 999's My Dad Trashed My Submarine.

Long Live Love as it will always trump hate and despair, we could all do with a lot more love in the world right now, so join them is willing the world to fill up with love, one flute blast at a time.

The Dread of the last few years has become overwhelming, they can't shake the fear of all the spectres chasing them in dreams and life, the backing is surprisingly chipper and upbeat, no matter how much they want to become recluses from modernity.

The Dread has gone away and now I Feel Alright is seemingly more upbeat power pop to greet a bright new day, while you count your blessings that you're not a dribbling mess and have survived it all, to make it to the final two bonus tunes which this is the first of, complete with bonus sax and harmonica.

The album closes with Someone Who Doesn't exist the second of the bonus tunes that has carefully strummed acoustic guitars and feelings of triumph that you have managed to completely erase your memory of that ex that irked you so much.
