Pareidolia is the latest album from Eiko Ishibashi & Jim O'Rourke who have remixed live recordings taken from the duo's European tour in April 2023 to create a sonic suite.
The album title is broken up into four parts for the song titles so that this exploration of sound opens with Par a 10 minute ambient noise journey, through slow bass drum thumps, space flight swooshes, thunder crackling, spatial creaks of distress, the journey is underway and all you hear are squiggles of space, sonic waves sent out over the celestial airwaves, floating through space time and infinity.
Ei has a haunted space feel, with glitchy interspersions, drums almost feel buried, beneath the swirling windswept strings and synths, the timpani reverberating through time and space syntactically rattling messages.
Do crackles with snatches of chopped up words, like a Burroughs cut up played backwards and sideways, odd strings add to the interference, created by atonal horns mewling besides the gong bath, gentle chill out feelings in a garden, by a snow-capped mountain, perfect to sit and meditate. Vinyl crackles, harmonica gently bows far away sounds, birds flutter by.
Lia extends the meditative core into water dropping into a pond, with enervated strings pulling you towards some epiphanies of the soul, evoked by the blissful state, listening to this and meditating brings, with the finger bells and lonesome tonal sophistry.
