Review: 'Armisen, Fred'
'100 Sound Effects'

-  Label: 'Drag City Records'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '26.9.25.'-  Catalogue No: 'DC952'

Our Rating:
This new album by Fred Armisen does exactly what it says it will, it contains 100 Sound effects that you can either use in your own creations, or put on as background music to unsettle anyone wandering in to the different effects, from a band sound check to audience applause, checking out a hire car, glasses breaking etc.

This review will try to give an idea of what its like to listen to this classic Library music album as an album, but all these effects can be used as directed by the titles or slipped into tracks your making, just don't forget to credit Fred.

The album opens with Needle On Record and the effects are accurately described, so that the next few effects of various instruments being sound checked are just that, perfect to be dropped into mixes as little interludes, more floor tom is always needed of course.

Possibly the best track on the album is the recording of Music Venue Employee Kicking Everyone Out While Throwing Away Bottles in a perfectly surly manner.

The Music store section tries out several products without any need for Stairway. Followed by a series of Car Doors closing, some get slammed some are gentler and have the annoying beeping noises.

We then get a series of small theatre audience noises, from clapping to muttered asides, booing and soundchecks, followed by some canned applause and laughter, followed by classic covers of a variety of glasses being smashed, Fred still loves the sound of breaking glass.

We then take a trip on a plane and get a bunch of overheard
conversations, overhead lockers being closed, safety announcements et al. It's then time for some home improvements, various saws and drilling sounds. Some Gift wrapping and Metal roller doors going up and down up and down.

Here we are at Camp Grenada only things are less fun this time around, the rain pours down, you zip up that tent flap among the fireside chats, that are strangely sober sounding, like they are at a Lutheran campground.

The sports section is mainly basketballs being bounced around. Before we hear various fridges being opened and explored and the room service being opened. No one walks on gravel quite as alluringly as these samples.

For Halloween we get some haunted house sounds to spook you out, if dropped into a mix or playlist, leading into the final movie section that includes some hand washing, vegetable chopping with a mad Italian lady ranting, before we take a tour of a European hotel, opening doors riding elevators and using the washing machines, all things to make unsuspecting listeners to your play list shoot you an odd look or three.
