Drinkin' At The Bar is the debut 7" ep by Portland Oregon Garage rockers Thee Montgomery Wards who are a trio of Melissa, Chuck & Steve who recorded at Fetish pop Studios in Portland Oregon with Kirk Larsen engineering. It isn't made clear if any of the band members worked at Montgomery Wards department store or if the bands amps and instruments originally came from the store or not.
The A-Side opens with this classic Garage rock Booze-soaked anthem Drinkin' At The Bar all for the joys of being a total lush who drinks all week long, every day except Sunday, when I guess they dry out a bit, this has a good drunken ramshackle feel to it.
Road Flare isn't an anthem to Portland style insurrection, but is more the soundtrack to driving through the night on the quiet country roads, with the top down on a convertible and the stereo up so loud the police might stop you and accuse you of noise pollution.
The B-side opens with Daze Of Our Lives a fuzz laden lysergic anthem to living in a permanently dazed state, that no foot stomping beat can ever totally relieve, they have lost there mind living in the peace strewn streets of Portland, fighting for the right to get smashed again.
The EP closes with a cover of The Cynics classic Get My Way that allows drummer Melissa to scream and prowl her way through this, like a stone fox who knows how to get just what she wants, and the rest of the band no better than to deny her what she wants.
