Early 90's Camden legends in there own lunchtimes The Studio 68! Have managed to sober up enough to re-launch and record Rollin' an immensely great new album, a modern blues rock soul and mod classic, complete with new lead singer the amazing Dani Turner joining Paul Moody, Will Beaven, Patrick O'Sullivan et al. The album was produced by Brian O'Shaughnessy at Bark Studios in Walthamstow
The album starts as it means to go on with Funky People that is a primes slice of funky good times mod rock, in praise of all the Funky People they like to hang out with, Dani Turner's full-throated vocals somewhere between Sass Jordan and Lisa Kekaula riffing over the organ.
Hall Of Mirrors seems to be where we are currently stuck with no future and no past, with no idea how to move back towards safe ground again with the swirling guitar jousting with the sax and flute while they groove on.
Magic Touch grooves on that Hammond organ style sound while Dani tells us how it is if you want to try to have that Magic Touch while you spin jump and drop on the dancefloor like it's 5 in the morning at Wigan Casino and you are determined to out dance everyone else.
Need A Miracle has that squalling funk guitar and the cries of are you ready, this is a clarion call for having a good time and not letting the bastards get too you, with Dani letting rip like Janis on fire. One Way Ticket is a brief keyboard and guitar vamp to allow everyone to catch their breaths.
Seasons opens with some rain and wind sounds for this song about the changing of the seasons and no matter how things change they seem to stay the same too. This has a more soulful edge in an early 70's PP Arnold way.
Time Slips Through Your Hands is a slow flute soul song reminiscing, on just how your dreams get stolen by the music industry, you are chewed up and spat out, before you even knew what was going on you're a has-been or never was. The sax solo that plays as you walk away from everything, not knowing how you'll put your life back together, is full of sadness and regret. After the false ending this goes in a sitar and tablas direction for the outro coda.
Turn Off Your Mind is a slow gospel soul belter for stepping away from the online madness and finding yourself some real space to think and to free your soul and go and have a good time, put down that mobile phone and get with the groove. Wasn't ready is a rebel soul manifesto for always fighting against the man and not know towing when your young or even when your old, whatever you do go your own way and get with the never-ending groove.
The Way It Is the tube is delayed again, it's time to re-work Gimme Shelter into a blues soul groove that Brian Auger would be happy with, while they struggle to get across town when nothing is working like it should, at the close of this incredibly great Mod soul album.
