Our Rating:
Ok Shine Ok is the totally solo album by Dressy Bessy legend Tammy Ealom who is now The Tammy Shine who wrote recorded and played everything on this album, along with doing the artwork and making the videos in Denver.
The album opens with Shaky Shaky a cool indie pop song for some intense feelings you're having, but you're not sure about, with the askew synth lines bring all your stress out. Baby, I'll Be there is an anthem for making it on your own, believing in yourself, you wanna get out of this place and not have to look at your face anymore, so avoid the tears and fights and get going now, with some cool keyboard and guitar driven indie pop.
So Very Little is kind of what Alanis Morisette might have sounded like, if she was singing Baroque indie songs, about how So Very Little she cares about you. Junk Mail asks if anyone really loves you, well according to Tammy probably not, you will be going home alone once more, listening to all your Barenaked Ladies albums by yourself.
Love Letter wants forgiveness and another chance at love with you, a bit like David Bowie she promises to try to make her love last till Wednesday rather than David's Tuesday deadline, this also has a rather more modern indie sound.
Speed Date rampages across your speakers at a furious pace, Tammy goes through the modern horror show that is speed dating, will she meet anyone who can name three Dressy Bessy albums, who will offer to buy her a drink, or will it be another wasted evening, getting her heart broken once more, like she's in a classic new wave band.
Not Today no you won't catch her falling, slow sparse for the pains of what went wrong, she wants to dance till the end of time rather than complaining, which in this current environment is a brave thing to say.
Blue Jay is a song pretending it's your birthday, keyboards adding flourishes to their pretending to love each other, just enough to spend some time together in the dark, without mentioning any sports teams.
Prizefight asks why would you be a Prize Fighter and possibly ruin your life in that way, can you survive in that dirty world or not, this has some wonderful, twanged guitar parts in amongst the clattering guitars and a groove that's almost perfect for a dust up.
Tic Tac has an almost rap pop feel for that game of Tic Tac that might give her some freedom and her life back, while she steps back up to the mic to show what a survivor she is. Autopilot is the last thing Ok Shine Ok sounds like, this has some cool organ stabs for the poppy edge she brings to the life affirming lyrics encouraging you not to live on Auto Pilot.
The album closes with Lil Fences of the sort you'll easily jump while listening to a legend admitting she has that status now, not that it changed her, she still has to push down those fences, standing in the way of her being able to do what she wants, to be wicked and cool, adding some melodica to get her point across, like a more indie Grace Potter rolling down an endless highway.
