Review: 'Modesty Blaise'
'Carol Mountain'

-  Album: 'Melancholia' -  Label: 'From Lo-fi to Disco!'
-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
Bristol indie pop group Modesty Blaise return with Carol Mountain a newly remastered single that acts as the first preview of the 25th anniversary edition of Melancholia, out April 24 through From Lo Fi To Disco! Even with the history behind it, the track does not come off like some preserved relic being brought back out for nostalgia. It still feels fully intact on its own, which says a lot. There is something very composed about it, very self possessed, and that restraint is part of why it lands.

The sound is what really holds it together. Carol Mountain does not try to pull you in through obvious drama or some oversized hook. It opens up slowly, letting the atmosphere build in a way that feels careful rather than hesitant. The remaster gives the song more room and clarity, but it does not mess with what made it work in the first place. It still feels intimate, a little distant in a good way, and emotionally steady instead of overstated. That balance between softness and scale is what gives it weight.

The video suits it well too. Built from archival footage from the bands 2002 New York performances, it adds to the song without trying too hard to explain it. That is what makes it work. It has texture, mood, and that slightly worn, reflective feel that fits the track naturally. The whole thing gives off a cool, understated energy. Not cold, not over romanticized, just genuinely in step with the music and the kind of feeling it leaves behind.

With the full Melancholia remaster arriving April 24, Modesty Blaise are giving this material a strong return rather than just reissuing it for the sake of it.Carol Mountain is already up on Bandcamp, which is the best way to support the band directly right now while waiting for the full release. Between this single and what is still coming, there is more than enough reason to keep an eye on them.
