Orange is the first new album by White Fence in seven years and find's Tim Presley being produced by Ty Segall at his Harmonizer II studios, they are joined by Alice Sandahl and Dylan Hadley in White Fence.
The album opens with That's Where The Money Goes (Seen From The Celestial Realm) he can't quite believe that the money is wasted quite like that, with the 60's inflected gloom pop sound, head shaking vocals, hoping to have enough to get little bit higher, so he doesn't have to pawn his tools so his family can eat, which might be why his love doesn't want to remain in frame.
I Came Close, Orange For Luck has a hazy summer vibe to its jangle pop guitars, reverbed vocals have a soft insistence that even this far down the line you can still claim Orange For Luck.
Your Eyes marries a Kinks riff to some slowed down glammy bass and drums to give this a very late 60's hazy pop feel, strained through Alex Chilton trying to escape Bach's Bottom and find some coherence while he obsesses over the effect Your Eyes have on him.
Given Up On My Heart is swathed in Mystic Green guitars, while he explores the darkest parts of his heart, that has been broken asunder once more, smiling days are over. Unread books is sparse reflections on how you've had a change of heart, reflected through the Unread Books that may never get read now you are apart from each other, super minimal drums and guitar make this totally bereft sounding, so inconsolable at all your changes of mind destroying his equilibrium.
Evaporating Love it has come to this, hints at what once was and now can never be again, shot through the downhearted jangle, the drums sound far more excited, despite his loneliness, never being more than a snare beat away.
Reflections In A Shop Window On Polk gives us insights into what Tim perceives he sees in those shop windows on Polk but is it Polk in San Francisco or Chicago or another Polk entirely, The dappled guitars and slightly spaced sound make it feel like they are happy reflections.
I Wanted A Rolex and all you ended up with was this tune, that sounds like the tape machines batteries are running out, or the spools are loose, thoughts on what could have been. When Animals Come Back feels more hopeful almost like he's moved onto a better place already, along with insistent guitars and a determined back beat helping lift them out of the doldrums.
So Beautiful is a cover of the Simply Red tune, that being a Simply Red tune I'm not familiar with, in this case he's singing about a person who looks real cool, but is really as boring as can be, this has a laid back feel and some cool brass that thankfully sounds nothing like Simply Red which means this cover works.
The album closes with Blind Your Sun in the psychedelic miasma engulfing you, while you try to fix your heart and get you back to where you want to be, no matter what you think, White Fence are still on your side, hoping for things to seem normal once more.
