Our Rating:
New Road Movie is the second album by Autoleisureland who are the latest band formed by two key members of The Kane Gang, Paul Wood and David Brewis who continue to make music in that bands soulful pop vein.
The A-Side opens with Northern Morning that opens sounding like they are tuning the car up ready to go, the strings are gently evocative, ready for the indie soul vocals to start taking us on this gentle pretty journey one Northern Morning, to a place where they meet their former selves sounding not unlike The Kane Gang.
The single The World Over is a sweet song about the efforts of Musicians in Italy to keep peoples spirits up during the pandemic and how people the world over were looking for ways to make things better, the 80's flavoured guitar line is added to with some restrained percussion and the sweet vocals.
Love Is Gonna Keep Us Cryin' is a slow heartbreaker, with baleful strings and heartfelt vocals that has a sinuous Prefab Sprout Steve McQueen style feel, while they dream of a world without tears where you can love without fear, if only that was possible in these times.
Comsat Angels is a cool tribute to the bands 80's heroes, who they hope kept on dreaming, the minimal backing allows Paul's vocals to shine while they wait for the miracle of a world in which Comsat Angels were huge stars.
Come Whatever has a very gentle soulful groove while Paul tells his lover that he will always be by your side, while you go on adventures down to the sea and beyond, he'll be ready to slow dance with you.
The B-side opens with Almost Light a song for spending dawn with the one you love driving into the new day together sharing a love of the Lilac Time. Pool To Pool is a slightly less alcoholically challenged journey to the one in The Swimmer, they clearly don't have trunks as tight as Burt Lancaster's, but are ready to dive into the clear blue waters at any opportunity to the sound of those sweet strings.
Chemical Beach has a modern synthpop backing to go and pop some E's and party on down on that Chemical Beach in California, where you can get everything you need and lose yourself in the vapid beach culture.
Anything Can Happen is a beautiful string led ode to the wonderment of wanting to live in a happy peaceful place without heartbreak, where we all get on and live contented lives, ah such wistful dreaming of the possibilities currently being destroyed by idiots whose only idea of a happy ending is what happens when they get a massage.
The Last Motel isn't infested with roaches and low rent hookers and dealers, instead it's a calm oasis that you can lay back, relax and take in the beautiful sounds around you. The album closes with New Road Movie a synthpop cruise through a glass and steel canyon in some modern faceless city, they just need to drive away, looking for somewhere with more character, that will imbue them with an easier life, even if they have to sleep outside in the wastelands.
