Review: 'SLIMS'
'UTUNC'

-  Label: 'FAT NORTHERNER'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '14TH MARCH 2005'

Our Rating:
SLIMS (no ‘The’) look like they could handle themselves in a fight and/or have someone taken out and/or tell you “your name’s not down, you’re not coming in”. Visually they kind of remind of The Godfathers who years ago produced a minor classic in ‘Birth, School, Work, Death’. Musically though we’re in a hard rock territory and ‘Utunc’ (work it out) snarls and kicks like a ba**ard, its power mightily impressive given the fact that SLIMS are just a trio. Which by my deduction, Watson, must make them a power trio.

Anyway, there’s a pleasing touch of heavy funk a la Fishbone in the rhythm section separating the song from the overwhelming chaff that is often the norm in this genre. ‘Babe’ undoes some of the good work as it deflates with its slowed down pace and its dangerous move towards bland yank histrionic pout-rock like Nickelback and Staind.

There’s also the massive surprise bonus of a ‘radio edit’ version of the single which bleeps the F-word and so gives me licence to play it to my mother-in-law with a clear conscience. For that I am grateful.
