After over thirty years The Greenberry Woods are back with The bands third album It's All Good, Sugar... that allows these Baltimore College rockers to show us how they have matured in the intervening years. The Greenberry Woods are Matt Huseman, Ira Katz, Brandt Huseman, Paul Krysiak and Joe Parsons, with special guests on The Day We Drowned Brett Friedman and Tony Waddy. Produced by The Greenberry Woods, engineered by Paul Krysiak and Ira Katz with Tony Waddy, mixed and mastered by Paul Krysiak. Most of the band have also been in the Greenbury Woods offshoot Splitsville.
The album opens by asking us to rewind to Summer Song in the hazy days of the mid-90's, sounding like they would have fit right into many college radio stations of the time, hoping you will sing along with them, along with the feeling that Matthew Sweet was always an inspiration to them.
Waiting 'Round For Something To Go Wrong would in the old days have meant wating for ages, these days it probably means about 20 minutes if you have the news on or are scrolling on your phone. They want to shift the thoughts on their minds and play jangly guitar pop all day once more.
Whenever You Want Me Too he'll still be ready to welcome you back into his arms, it doesn't matter how badly you treated him, he is still ready to go round again, yearning vocals twist them through another drama, ready to harmonize and be as one again.
Lame Love Letter is wonderfully nostalgic for the days when people still sent Love Letters rather than texts or emails, he hopes he doesn't runout of second chances and can still be yours, sweet harmony vocals and a sense he will never be so bitter as a John Felice break up song.
Very Good Year was hoping to make it an all time great, but then things just went wrong, in sweet power pop ways, they have a stomper of a riff and lush harmonies, ready for some School Of Rock style sha la la backing vocals and a Miracle 3 style guitar solo.
On The Day We Drowned is fragile strings and hushed elegiac vocals, telling this sad tale of death and misadventure, while hoping they can come back and save the world in a song. All I Want Is You and to be able to add a John Cale Honi Soit style trumpet solo, to a song like this magnificently catchy song of love and lust. intensely yearning guitar solo, they really need is you to say yes, to going out with them.
That Won't Make You Love Me is a list of the things that may or may not be deal breakers between the sweethearts, if you harmonize enough together those differences may evaporate, or turn into chasms between you, listen to this love song and figure out which side you want to end up on, is a brief encounter preferable to falling in love again, while trying to figure out where you know that guitar part from, is it Big Star or Ozzy Osbourne can it be that wide a divide.
The One That Makes You Happy is a soaring anthem for the love you hope to share with each other, they will do whatever it is that pleases you, he doesn't need any apologies, just more chiming guitars and spry drumming and one smile from you and that will be enough, the counter vocal shouting towards the end is a rather Beatlesque touch.
That Girl must be in love with Elvis Costello if this tune is anything to go by, organ rising through the tune and sound sensation vocals, that almost can't get the words out quickly enough to explain why That Girl is easier to love than you are.
Leave The Light On as he'll be coming home so drunk he can't find the door lock again, oh no that's not what's wrong in this sweet indie-pop love song, for having a special one to come home too. It really shouldn't be this hard to sound like another Lloyd Cole song.
The album closes with December Boy one last plea for forgiveness and being allowed the love you crave, trying to remember what sparked that argument in September that's still rumbling on in December while they are still looking towards the future while gently tinkling away on the piano once more, time will never wait for them.
