Our Rating:
From The Tombs is the first single from the forthcoming Bring Your Own Hammer double concept album about crime and disorder in Ireland in the 19th century. On this single Mike Smalle and June Miles Kingston are joined by Terry Edwards, Bernard Butler, Fergal Lawler, Ian Catt and Marcus Holdaway.
From The Tombs has wonderful strings and a bucolic air heralding dusk, while they are in a bar near the market, where things are happening, they remember Blackwells Island that the wayward girl from Ireland is headed for, the twin vocals are very evocative of the times and places they are recalling, when the brass section swoop in before the string section lift them, while they are about to be transported on that prison ship, this has so many layers, revealing themselves after a few listens, a great foretaste for the complete album.
