Our Rating:
SHADOWS" (NEW RELEASE 25/11/02) (F COMMUNICATIONS F171CD)

The first single to be culled from his forthcoming LP, "Different", "All I See Is Shadows" finds Finnish DJ JORI HULKKONEN running with Paul Oakenfold's baton and introducing guest vocalist Nick Triani with this stylish electro-pop single.

Because, while Hulkkonen may have adopted the Detroit deep house sound as a starting point, this single finds him branching out and touching base with his early to mid 1980s influences, with more than a dash of Dep Mode/ Human League pepping up the melting pot.

There are three versions of the main track featured on the single. The Alternative Edit is arguably the straightest radio track, with Triani's vocal emerging from the wings after some murky cut-ups and the simple, but dark chorus ramming the hook home.

The regular Edit, though, is this reviewer's favourite cut. Sparser and more percussive, it leaves Triani's vocal relatively unadorned and is all the better for it, while the lengthy Alternative Version (9 minutes plus) adopts a typically familiar, pumpin' Detroit stance as a starting point.

All are merely reshapings of a stylish original, but the nippng and tucking ensure the end results form a pleasing aural gallery for you to flick through often enough.
