Review: 'VALENTINO, BOBBY'
'SLOW DOWN'

-  Label: 'DEF JAM'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '2nd May 2005'-  Catalogue No: 'SLOWCJ1'

Our Rating:
"Slow Down" is sparse and soulful, desire-fuelled pop with swirls of harp/ strings and tablas. It's a lush love song with beathy backing vocals and neither the belting r'n'b or braggadocio-fuelled hip-hop I'd tend to expect when encountering a Def Jam release.

Which, in this case, is a relatively pleasant surprise. Although the sleeve of an airbrushed Bobby reclining and moodily looking like he'd be inclined to indulge in a 'lurve' encounter is standard glossy pop fare ( and the single will no doubt be accompanied by the de rigeur Hollywood promo flick to boot), the song itself in isolation is actually surprisingly OK. It finds Bobby turning in an effective vocal performance, and the way he delivers the kiss-off line "just turn around and bless me with your beauty" is weirdly affecting. And I certainly hadn't been expecting that.

So, while "Slow Down" is hardly this reviewer's chosen cup of spicy hemlock as a rule, it's soulful enough to convince and might just beat down a few preconceptions into the bargain.

S'alright.
