The new self-titled EP from San Francisco hard core jangle pop duo The Chutes, who after some intensive reinvention have gone from playing in Hardcore punk bands to their true destiny playing fey jangle pop. The Chutes are Kenneth Turner and Erika Calderon the album was recorded and engineered by Charles Toshio.
The Ep jangles into life with Scraping The Last Bits Of Light trying to get you to go outside, instead of moping about at home, like you really want too, the boy girl vocals are in conversation, about if they really should go outside, it's such a fright, Erika is far more up for it than Kenneth, who just wants to perfect his heavenly style jangle pop chops.
Like Waves has upbeat jangling vibes, for finding the energy to go to the beach and see the waves, The Chutes are not getting a surfboard out, far too much effort, they really want to make the best Darling Buds meets Felt B-side they can, this comes pretty close.
Nowhere In Particular sends shivers, while reminding me of The Smiths or The Razorcuts, while once again all they want to do is stay at home, perfecting that wedge bowl haircut and getting their guitars to ring and jangle perfectly.
Mise En Place is for the sad moment when your left to your own misery, she's left you in the lurch, you are nowhere to be seen, all they can do is sit at home wondering where you may be, probably out having a good time, doing all the stuff you couldn't do while being an indie recluse, while the harmonies make the despair seem so fragile.
What Have I Got Myself into has a Talulah Gosh or Marine Girls feel, for those confused feelings about how this relationship is going, the dread of not knowing What Have I Got Myself Into whose denouement of crashing cymbals, hints at the darkness behind the curtains.
Twin Lens takes me back to my childhood and my dad's experiments with using a Twin Lens camera, rather than playing dumb in your room, you really should be posing for some wonderful picture outside in the sun, rather than being a static wallflower once more, more winsome than ever, always thinking you're making a fool of yourself, for trying to get you to go outside, but it takes her forever to get ready in this indie melodrama. How did they ever survive in Hardcore mosh pits.
The Ep closes with Everything Loses Its Color In The Dark is one of the important issues, they wish to spend several days discussing with you, despite the fact you told them you understood, you could dig that, the moment they said it for the first time, still it's better than hearing them obsess about owning every single on Sarah Records and showing you their collection of Field Mice bootlegs, while this jangles you into submission once more.
