Review: 'ROGERS SISTERS, THE'
'London, 93Ft East, 9th May 2005'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
Last Monday at 93 Feet East was a real treat for me, I was going to see the ROGERS SISTERS and somehow I knew I was gonna like them before I even heard their music. I had seen a little press relating to them previously and was suitably intrigued as they looked very edgy. So when I was offered the chance to review, I jumped at it.

And yes, I was not disappointed. The Rogers Sisters are cool motherfuckers. They are absolutely fucking great with punky thrashy sounds in beautifully mastered songs. Miyaki Furtado on vocals and bass, Jennifer Roggers on vocals and guitar and Laura Rogers on drums and backing vocals complete the line-up. They started out from the now ultra hip arty New York bohemia that is Williamsburg, though they actually originate form Detroit and met fellow adopted Rogers sister Furtado at a party doing a drunken karaoke session. Not taking themselves too seriously, they state: “we want to stay away from the seriousness and over-thought-outedness of 90s indie rock”, and remain concerned with having fun foremost and belting out your aggression, while retaining a pop sensibility. Jennifer is beautiful with her eighties-rockstar-all-pinned-to-one-side hair do, tight mini skirts and boots; Laura is a spitting image of a young Chrissie Hynde and Furtado is all Hawaii/ Japanese coolass in his tight jean and pink tie attire.

Their set was amazing and captivating throughout. The audience, including myself, could not stand still for one minute. They are pure genius, coming across like B52’s meets the Yeah Yeah Yeahs meets New York cool. There is something very retro about them and their sound, yet they still sound refreshingly new and very original with lyrics that are sophisticated and funny. Their songs have abrupt endings, are sometimes sung in French or Japanese and range from thrashy melodic upbeat riffs, drum beats with influences from punk, eighties rock to 50s rock n’ roll. Perfect pop, infectious and thoroughly entertaining.

Supporting bands for the night were the theatrical Red Organ Serpent and Bucky. Red Organ Seprent are an amazing looking band, very well stylised, classic rock with an electrifying performance by lead singer. Bucky is a two man band guitar and drums show, performing up-tempo, Bloc Party-style sequels, with comic banter between the duo during the intermissions ‘tween songs.

But these were merely prequels for the real deal tonight. The ROGERS SISTERS kick ass, their mini album ‘Three fingers’ is out now and is highly recommended rough here. Check them out.
