Our Rating:
"To Die" for is the second slice of chugging, straight up slowburn'n'roll from Bristolian quintet UNDERCUT. All the hooks are in the right place, drummer Matt Albon adds a neat infusion of discoid beats to the sweet'n'loud FX-ed guitars and the lyrical content deals with the feeling of crushing disappointment most of us males have felt when our ex-girlriends choose to go out with one of our mates instead. "You think you can breeze right in and take my place," spits singer Johnny Benn, as he takes another emotional kick in the groin. Whoa, feller.

The remainder of the EP ( maxi single?) continues in a similar vein, and while the hooks and ear candy aren't quite so perfect, neither of these are slouches either. "So Beautiful" verifies the fact Benn has a suitably smoky, hangdog voice for this lind of territory, and while it does all veer a little close to Coldplay in places, this is still a decent enough track with a wide-eyed innocence all its' own.   "Backroom" is arguably better again: full of sinewy, expectant guitars and leaking with an air of mystery, while a reference to the similarity to Peter Gabriel in Benn's voice that had previously made this hack laugh wildly suddenly sounds kinda cogent. Oh well, it's a funny old world, ain't it?

Anyway, all this is basically a prosaic way of saying Undercut are sounding like convincingly anthemic contenders in the near future.   I'd be confident in predicting you'll be hearing a lot more of this lot over the next 12 months or so.
