Review: 'VIRGO, MARTIN'
'Ghost Piano'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '21st August 2026'

Our Rating:
This London-based artist has previously worked with Björk and Massive Attack which immediately qualifies him as an artist of note in my book.

On this solo album, Virgo plays a Steinway model B acoustic grand piano and only on the title track do we hear any other instrument with Nick Cooper adding discrete cello accompaniment.

There’s an immaculate simplicity and lack of showiness in the eleven short instrumentals.

None of the tunes last more than three minutes and they are intended to conjure up the ‘ghosts’ of Chopin, Debussy and Satie whilst evoking the atmosphere of late 19th century Paris. Titles like Le Chat Noir and Strange Tango speak for themselves.

My personal favourite is This Moment (Is All There Is) and this title expresses well the fleeting and fragile quality of these haunting piano melodies.
