The Producers Cut offers Orang-Utan's sole album in three distinct mixes, showing why this has become a legendary early 1970's heavy rock album. This re-issue uses the original tapes found in Adrian Millers loft. The album was recorded in one session at the legendary Dea Lane studios by producer Adrian Millar and Engineered by Louis Austin in 1970. These versions are The Producers Cut, the original Sessions instrumental tracks, in the correct running order, finally the LP Remix that is speed corrected and in the original order of the album's release. Orang-Utan was not the bands actual name, it was actually Hunter, but the album was originally released in the USA without the band knowing about it! They were Jeff Seopardie, Mick Clarke, Paul Roberts and Terry Nobby Clarke.
The album opens with Magic Playground (Producers Cut) setting out the bands stall, they are taking you on a psychedelic acid rock trip into the hard rocking world of Orang-Utan a mean bunch of Hunter's, seeking to find the prey they need, one twin guitar fusillade at a time, over-wrought ruminations on recent assignations.
I Can See Inside Your Head (Producers Cut) yes he certainly Can See Inside your head every time you go to bed, this is every bit as cocksure as Free or Detective when playing similar louche bedroom bound hard rock.
Slipping Away (Producers Cut) he's happy being down beside you, but you both know you'll be Slipping Away the first chance you can get afterwards, he's not made for much more than a six minute fling with you. With all the ups and downs he can squeeze not another brief encounter.
Love Queen (Producers Cut) a slow starting session of worship of that Love Queen, who is allowing him to have is entanglement, bringing him to her beck and call, but if he does the wrong thing, he will soon be on his way, so happy to have had a chance to worship at her alter, the frenzied freak out, they go at it, crazed out of his mind with joy, because he's scored a real live love Queen, but when the music slows down, she's had her fun, he tries to make out she now looks to old for him.
If You Leave (Producers Cut) This young Gillan has lost his woman once more, she's told you she's out the door and know your down on the floor begging her to stay, with weeping and wailing guitars and the marching out the door rhythm section, he carries on begging, did he not get the free love message of the late sixties or something, give him that silver lining nudge nudge.
Country Hike (Producers Cut) has everyone smiling at him as he strolls down sunset like it is a country road to the middle of nowhere over the slow laid-back rural blues riff helping to accent the adventures he has, trying to feel groovy sleeping in a field overnight.
Fly Me High (Producers Cut) has a dark urgency to the plea not to die if you fly too high, they have certainly kissed the sky and would like to find a way back down. Chocolate Piano (Producers Cut) is low down, greasy early 70's Led Zep infused boogie rock, twin guitars fighting it out, wailed vocals making clear what it was like, walking the streets late at night by yourself.
Slipping Away (Original Session) chugs away like a Cream meets Free with hints of Blind Faith musical bed to be strutted and preened along too. Until the neo mediaeval folk rock break down, I Can See Inside Your Head (Original Session) clairvoyant blues rock for the always entangled lovers, with semi orgasmic interjections allowing the guitars to spurt and shrink. Chocolate Piano (Original session Version) has that early 70's Boogie rock intro that in this mix is a bit greasier, biker rock twin guitars battling it out, bucking and squalling away, all trying to outdo each other, one bent guitar string at a time on this instrumental version.
Flying High (AKA Fly Me High) (Original session Version) seems slower and more probing as an instrumental, a gentle chill-out blues rock tune. Magic Playground (Original session) is a neo-operatic prog classical extravaganza stripped on the vocals, turn on the lava lamps and oil wheels with coloured light bulbs and freak along to this. If You Leave (Original session) then he will play this deep begging blues rock to accompany you packing your bags and leaving him crawling on the floor begging you to stay, he can't be without you or his jamming away.
Country Hike (Original session) shorn of the vocals is a slow blues riff for slowly ambling along too, finding your way to those special country places. Love Queen (Original session) allows you to slowly worship at the altar of that Love Queen, kissing her boots and working your way slowly up her body, you obey her every direction, she is the Love Queen, when she tells you it's time to rock you rock like a total Rockabilly freak all the way to the inevitable climax. One last cuddle and then you will be dismissed by the Love Queen until your next appointment.
I Can See Inside Your Head (LP Remix) is what he claims he can do every time you go to bed together, making him the perfect lover, letting you drift away and well then, he draws you back in with his amazing loving abilities and libidinal grunts coming through the spry picked guitar solos and experienced rhythm section. Whatever you do don't leave him alone, because he can always satisfy you.
Slipping Away (LP Remix) its all going away, leave those worries behind drive by that heavy creamy bass, they are going in the streets to be wild and Free, ready to Slip Away at the merest hint of something more fun up along the road. The comedown hits him, you are really leaving, he will always be there for you, you can always come back, before the band builds back and he's ready for his next adventure.
Love Queen (LP Remix) is rock me in your arms slow, seductive descriptions of that magical Love Queen and all she does for him, his sadness that this is no forever thing, she'll be pushing him out the door as soon as she can, deed is done, but he wants her to be his Love Queen, this changes up a few gears like a real cartoon chase around the place grabbing what you can, when you can.
Chocolate Piano (LP Remix) is 70's boogie rock with a Led Zeppelin twist or two, chiming twisting guitars and vocals going the full Robert Plant, yelping and grinding for someone walking the streets alone at night.
If You Leave (LP Remix) this cock of the walk has been dumped again, know he is ready to explain what it means to him If You Leave him, he's going to be down on the ground begging and pleading like the pussy whipped slave to your love he really is, the guitars are just begging you to give him once more chance of grinding like that bassline does. He'll get properly freaky with you in the instrumental break.
Fly Me High (LP Remix) Is full throated yearning begging and pleading over a laid-back tune. Country Hike (LP Remix) slow blues for going down to the country for a stroll, adventures that might happen along the way, if you are stuck out there overnight. This has a jammed after a few beers feel to it. The album closes with Magic Playground (LP Remix) he’s having all the fun he we wanted now he is living free and easy, loads of echo and stretched out guitars allow them to have a real acidic trip leaving behind reality, almost turning into prog rock symphony.
