Come Home To Me is the latest album by Anton Barbeau this time in tribute to his childhood home and the memories evoked in the wake of his father death. Along with the need to empty the house of all its memories and treasures. I was hoping to hear some of these songs played live last Sunday, but unfortunately didn't get off work early enough to see Anton's set sadly. The album was recorded at Dark Mystery Temple, The Office and The Little Yellow House in Auburn California with help from Colin Moulding, Dave Gregory, Terry Edwards, Michael Urbano, Andy Metcalfe and Donald Ross Skinner. Mastered by Myles Boison.
The album opens with the gently evocative World Calls Love with chiming guitars and that powerful light of love and kindness that Anton wants the whole world to feel, once more finally being a world full of love, rather than pain and hatred, go on give Anton some of your love right now.
Somebody To Blame for not picking up the phone, in the old days when you could leave it to ring for ages before picking up, no answering machines, and that feeling of anticipation and dread for who might be on the other end of the line, he answers to offers of prizes he has allegedly won, he wants to speak to the persons manager, like that will ever happen.
You Got Something then why not give it away, not quite in the John Lennon vein of giving up all you possessions, while holed up in a super hotel suite, this has some fuzzy guitar for all the imagery to unfurl, like you could be a modern day Robin Hood, giving away anything you have, that is more than you actually need, go the full Marie Kondo to this tune.
Your Holy Motor is blissed out memories and hopes for what may happen, if you get to ride inside that Holy Motor down life's highways and byways, if you are in the sun or not. The City Below builds on a hushed piano line that keeps you waiting and hoping for somewhere cool to go, while gazing down on The City Below, Anton is ready for more adventures.
Under The Radar is where Anton has been for most of his career, as evoked by samples of radio intros and interview snippets, bubbling under the acoustic guitars and synth and studio effects. Come Home To Me is faster and is pleading for you to Come Home To Me he needs to spend some more time with you ASAP, he wants to persuade you to give in to all the pleasures you can imagine.
Awkward & Upward you are ready to fly away, before the sun turns grey, gently poetic lyrics asks questions and expound thoughts and memories, while life gently ebbs and flows around you, with fuzzy guitar and genteel percussion.
I Touched The Butter sounds almost like some weird fetish the way Anton sings I Touched The Butter, while claiming you're not warmed up, with some great odd synth noises, leading you into the dark weird, slightly salted world of miseducation and butter related scenarios.
Some Kinda Comfort can be found writing down your feelings and creating songs like this, getting through the hurt and pain of loss, while realizing we are made of love and breezy guitar parts like this has. So Many Tears have been shed for his dad and trying to find a way to move onwards, while celebrating local supermarket products and the odd feelings they create, this is wonderfully askew look at the odd hits of grief he felt.
Swindon Calling has sweeping strings taking him deep into Wiltshire, hoping that every song is a friend, so he can find some ecstasy and happiness that far west, while the guitars are fuzzed up and flickering in the distance on the other side of all that booze.
Who Wants To Party? Well Anton of course, this buzzes gently to the ever evolving questions, of Who Wants To Party, who do they want to party with, is it you, it is gentle disco funk indie, to get on down, right here, right now with Anton and his chums, you know it will be a blast, that loud mouthed reviewer might even put in a appearance, if he can ever get his act together.
The album closes with All Thru The Night that might share a title with Lou Reeds sludge jazz classic, but is far less sleazy and bellicose, this has a gentle edge to forgetting your name, trying to recall who you are while the kettle's boiling, you're about to get you last cup of tea in this kitchen, you've recited one too many nursery rhymes, to be allowed to stay any longer in the parental home, now they have sadly departed all those memoires will have to leave when you do.
