Chrome is the latest album by the endlessly creative Ty Segall, recorded once again with his core band of Ben Boye, Evan Burrows, Mikal Cronin & Emmett Kelly. Produced by Ty Segall and Cooper Crain, recorded by Cooper Crain, mixed by Cooper Crain and Ty Segall, assistant Engineer Mario Ramirez.
The Album opens with Hospital that is in no way as fragile or beautiful as the Modern Lovers classic of the same title, a heavy bass and synth grind while Ty tells us she is like a Hospital to him, I hope he hasn't been waiting in A & E all night to see her, guitars sound like they are prepping some machines to scan him with. Not sure how good the results are, getting more frayed at the edges.
Running To Nowhere has a dark greasy bass riff, hoary rock vocals giving way to almost peasant psyche guitars, this builds and falls like you are Running To Nowhere in hope of finding what you need but never being able to quench that endless thirst. Black Paint is sad psychic adventuring, pained in need of cathartic flailing guitar, convincing you that natural love and Black Paint go together.
Glass is dirty greasy and in need of a good clean, he's picked you up and doesn't intend to let you go, he'll repeat that guitar line until you notice him, or you run out of air, this is disturbed stalker rock, that suddenly goes proggy, emphasizing how you'll never fly away, he clipped your wings properly to that slow picked solo.
Play Cowboys and get scalped tickets to see Ty Segall play an underground show, the falsetto vocal trying to convince us that in the late malaise Playing Cowboys makes sense, because nothing else does. Your problems include not remembering the name of anyone over 17, that could be Alzheimer's, or it could be perversion, it's not quite clear in the hazy guitar in odd timings, that feel like typical Ty signature sound, searching for the key of Crazy Horse.
Everything You've Been greasy bass and gnarly guitar freakouts, over slack dreams. Let Go takes a classic dance tune and mauls it with distortion and flailed guitars, Ty hurtling towards that person with no control on a white swan, watching video's you have no control over, everything is out of control like the music scattered and intense.
Separation of country from government isn't quite what this frenzied fried at the edges, rollicking riffed screed is about, on the outside of everything you need to be Separated from. The album closes with Chrome a deadly 70's hard rock riff that won't let up, while those Chrome bumpers roll on by, Ty tells us that when he dies he will survive, yup his music will always remain to inspire future generations.
