Our Rating:
Psychotornado is the latest album by pop punk legends The Rezillos who I have somehow managed to miss seeing play at Rebellion over the years, despite loving most of the band's original singles. this album easily demonstrates why that may have been a mistake on my part. Now celebrating 50 years of Punk and the Rezillos, the current line-up is Fay Fife, Martin Metcalfe and Eugene Reynolds with Willy Molleson, Chris Agnew, Phil Marx and Gogo.
The album opens with the rifftastic Sugar Punk Fairy an anthem for someone who may look scary but is probably a sweetheart in reality, but looks are deceptive, despite what anyone may think of you it should be up to you how you look and present, the twin vocals make clear how frightening you may seem, but they don't care with the guitars going off.
Gangster is counting his dosh, behaving like a sugar daddy, they can't believe where you have your fingers, while expecting everyone to give you cash, the pop punk formula is similar to Syteria or Fuzzbox but without any synths.
Down To Earth is what they suggest you should be, no matter how much your head is in the clouds, the same old story of why we end up in pointless wars are explored within the urgent riff and roll leading to a bomb explosion ending.
Peppermint Girl is for another fucked up girl from another world, out your head and on a mission, while sounding like Blondie describing a woman they are jealous of, but at the same time kind of pity for that Peppermint Girl and all she does to survive in the Peppermint Lounge.
Cranium opens with a countdown to the heavy speedy riff while wondering why everything takes far longer than it ought to. When it breaks down at the end it has a slight Rocky horror show feel. Curse Of The Pretty Man with all his preening and self-love allows Fay to abuse him delightfully, making sure he has no idea what kind of Psycho Tornado is ripping him apart.
Caution Distortion has a good stutter energy and a chorus perfect to chant along with, while the guitars strafe the room and the energy drips down the walls while we all realize just how much the world is now distorted, they of course want to turn everything up to induce loads more glorious distortion.
3 Man Junkie Riot they are tearing everything apart in search of what they need to feed that itch, on the most Rockabilly tune on the album, Fay makes clear whatever you do don't Leave her here in the middle of the 3 Man Junkie Riot.
Edge Of Delight they want you to push the button and ignite the Edge of Delight, this is a monster rave up for having a good time and loads of fun. Hopefully they will fall over that edge and end up grinning and happy.
Be My Guy -Do Or Die it shouldn't be a threat, but in this woman's hands it certainly is, either you give in to her charms or its gonna go off in a not very nice way, so why would you agree to be her guy, we are left to wonder over the cool pop punk backing.
The album closes with Explotando a spaghetti western punk romp for all the dark western films they obviously love, sounding like some proper gringos on the edge of town ready for a showdown.
