Review: 'Phanilla'
'From The Dark'

-  Label: 'Last Night From Glasgow'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '4.9.26.'

Our Rating:
From The Dark is the second release by Scottish Indie band Phanilla who have expanded from a two-piece featuring cousins Sasha And Karl into a five-piece band who recorded in their home town of Glasgow.

The A-Side opens with You Bring The Light in a classical introduction to the album, that leads into Glitter & Daffodils a hazily pretty jangle pop song for days when all you long for are Glitter & Daffodils truly all that he needs.

Fragments ask a good few questions of what happened, over Prefab Sprout style indie pop with a sophisticated edge. Orbit has upbeat jangle pop guitars and a cool sensibility. Beautiful Monday they don't have a hangover from the weekend and are ready to face the world and keep things serene and couched in spry guitars and the feelings that Scottish pop really will take over the world this week.

Raindrops (Drift Away) has a wistful Postcard style laid back indie feelings for another dreich day. A Song For The Night when chiming guitars will make you more than a wallflower, you can see the light in her eyes and are getting excited. They can't get the song out their heads and that's about as wild as this night is going to get.

The B-side features additional B-Sides and bonus tracks that opens with Caroline that is in no way the most interesting of the dozens of songs I have about Caroline, she doesn't say anything about abuse or dreadful events, neither do they beg for her love in any unusual way, this is just a nice pleasant indie evocation of what Caroline means to them.

Tangerine Dream has a nice proggy intro, to this song for that mythical band, who hopefully aren't making any cathedrals need to be re-consecrated to this rather mellow laid back tune, with the guitars eventually rising to a slow Gary Moore style peak.

Everything, All At Once they are experiencing the modern information overload, and have sought refuge in quiet jangle pop loveliness, with hopes for a new love connection with a woman who really wants Everything, All At Once and they are unsure if they have the energy to keep pace with her, so say goodbye and go back to gazing at the wall and drifting into melancholia.

Decisions should you buy this album? Or should you wait for something else, well if you love well-crafted jangly Indie pop with a Prefab Sprout meets Sarah Records and Postcard Records feel then you really need this album in your life. , Will Phanilla make the right Decisions in their lives is a different question entirely.

The Others is asking, begging for exclusivity with him, and for you to give up all The Others you're running around with, he may need to make himself a bit more cool and interesting, if he's ever to succeed in gaining the commitment he seeks, especially in this age of dating apps.

The album closes with Post Summer Depression the nights are closing in and all they can find to do is play yet more pretty jangling indie pop songs, they are seeking some closure but really are wishing and praying for winter to be over and spring and summer be on there way once more.
