Review: 'Philein'
'Child of No Nation'

-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '2005'

Our Rating:
Much of the dance music sent this way is often of European nature; either that or their R&B-punctured tracks from the U.S. Philein's "Child of No Nation" (http://www.philein.com) fits it into neither of these categories. As you might guess from the artist's name, Philein is Asian, and the sounds on "Child of No Nation" (an apt title considering the cultural hybrid that exists within the grooves) are indebted to the styles of her ethnic roots while giving it an American touch.

The beats are less in-your-face compared to most club records, which are often so cookie-cutter in design that anything which breaks the mold is a cause for celebration. And certainly there is partying to do on "Child of No Nation." But take note that Philein isn't into your typical disco landscapes. "For All Eternity" blasts off into outer space for some interstellar grooving, utilizing layers of ice-cold synthesizers that grope for the stars.

There seems to be a conscious decision, both lyrically and musically, to transcend reality on "Child of No Nation." Then again, isn't dance music supposed to be a form of escapism? "Run Into Love" also has that otherworldly vibe made even more solid by Philein's daydreamer vocals.

On the serious side, the title track depicts the life of an Asian immigrant with a down-to-Earth acoustic setting and plaintive delivery.
