Review: 'SOULWAX'
'NITE VERSIONS (album sampler CD)'

-  Label: 'PLAY IT AGAIN SAM (PIAS RECORDINGS)'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'October 2005'

Our Rating:
SOULWAX are ace, and in my eyes can do no wrong. (Well, as yet anyway). To me, they epitomise the perfect band, managing to seamlessly switch from semi popular indie guitar band to super dooper funky dance DJs in one simple and elegant step without seeming to lose any followers on the way.

The sampler for upcoming album 'Nite Versions' contains four tracks of hip shaking, bum wriggling, and body moving tunes which would easily fill a dance floor in any self respecting indie / dance / electronica club. 'Nite Versions' is a remix of last album 'Any Minute Now' and features funky dance covers of all their previous songs.

Opening track 'NY Lipps' (the highly sought after Kawasaki Dub version nonetheless! (If you're not sure what I'm talking about, it's the version that was played in clubs throughout the country last year)) starts of with a fast paced drumbeat and syncopated cowbell tapping and within seconds begs to be danced along to. It has an 80's feel to it (robot dancing may have occurred at this point) and slowly builds up intensity with layer upon layer of singing and keyboard samples.

'Slowdance' has a techno feel to it which helps bring out the singing guitar samples from the original song and enhances the jazzy trumpet and keyboard additions to the tune. (Sounds bad I know, but believe me, it's good!) 'Accidents and Compliments' and final track 'KracK' both take a while to build up pace but once they get going are proper dance-along-to tunes with Talking Heads and Human League influences being shown here in abundance.

This is a cracking album sampler and if the whole album is even half as good as the four tracks on the sampler it should be a must for anybody who likes to boogie to songs in their bedroom or strut their stuff on the dance floor.
