Review: 'STEREOLAB'
'KYBERNETICKA BABICKA PT.1 (3 x 7" singles)'

-  Label: 'TOO PURE/ DUOPHONIC'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'September 2005'

Our Rating:
Six songs across three different 7"s. 'It's been done before,' I hear you say. 'It's a money making scam, designed to make the dedicated STEREOLAB fans part with their hard earned pennies. Pfft. Rubbish!'

Well hardly. Full of trademark electronic goodness, Moog and Theremin use galore, Stereolab are back doing what they do best, producing some sunny day music designed to make you go skipping down the street handing out flowers to strangers.

"Kyberneticka Babicka Pts.1+2" are essentially the same track.
I'm sure there are some subtle differences between the two songs, but if there are, I can't spot them. With an upbeat marching tempo, fat squishy keyboard chords and lots of twiddly bits over the top- the kind you'd get in a 1960's sci-fi program.

"Plastic Mile" has a more laid back feel to it, with beautiful vocals from lead singer Lætitia Sadier and contrasts nicely with B-side "I was a Sunny Rainphase" which has a definite 70s feel to it as it moves from a fast paced drumbeat, organ harmonies and staccato singing to a jazzy 20 second interlude in the middle of the track.

"Interlock" carries on with the jazzy feel to the singles with syncopated beats and trumpets sounding out above the keyboards and vocals and leads into the Kraftwerk sounding "Visionary Road Maps." These are fantastic songs which have the timeless quality surrounding all of Stereolab's work. Even if you are not a fan of electronica it's hard not to smile and tap your toes along to these upbeat, jazzy and funky tunes.
