'CATHERINE/ GUTTER GIRL'

Our Rating:
Start with some manic laughter, shout 1-2-3-4 and then rip-roar into distorted power chords over thumping bass and drums and launch a vicious lyrical attack on the girl you hate- less a song, more a statement of intent! The first track of JAED'S debut single "Catherine" is 47 seconds of female-fronted pop-punk. It's memorably hooky- not least for lines like "You think that we're junkies, but you don't wash your undies", it's frenetic and it sounds like it should have come from some warped version of the Clueless soundtrack.

The trio, fronted by Vanessa Eve draw immediate comparisons to other great female-led rock bands, Hole, Veruca Salt etc. "Catherine" is deliciously shallow and but in a knowing way that doesn't stray too far down the Blink-182 humour route and this is largely down to Eve. They have attempted, especially in second track "Gutter Girl", to draw on their front-woman's gritty experience to form a slightly darker, but deeper content to the songs.

Again building on spiky chords and a powerful rhythm, it drives along whilst Eve sings of her drug-addled and abusive past. Despite the disarming honesty of the lyrical content though, the song still feels a little unremarkable compared to the first but this is more a reflection of the infectious nature of the opener- which seems to positively overflow with enthusiastic ideas.

As debut's go, it certainly leaves an impression, and they can only build on that for their album due next year.
