Our Rating:
I'm actually struggling to correlate facts where WOLFMOTHER are concerned just yet, save that their new single "Mind's Eye" was produced by Dave Sardy (Oasis, Hot Hot Heat, System Of A Down) from sessions in LA which are liable to produce the band's new album for February release.

So let's concentrate solely on the music for now, because "Mind's Eye" would seem to warrant the attention. Certainly it's a classy, melancholy breath of rock air after the lyrical hectoring of the Plan B single I'd been reviewing previously and it's also a goodly few leagues away from the poppy, sampladelic sounds of Modular labelmates Cut Copy and The Avalanches.

In fact, it's a clever stylistic deviation. Unlike the slew of Coldplay/ Snow Patrol wannabes and the new crop of Interpol/ Editors clones, "Mind's Eye" suggests Wolfmother are instead decking out big, anthemic Coldplay-style sounds with some unlikely Prog trimmings, such as the ominous organ which hangs suspended throughout (imagine Rick Wright jamming with Snow Patrol) and the strangely groovy, Dave Greenfield-style keyboard runs that unexpectedly enter the picture around the 3 minute mark. I certainly hadn't been bargaining on the latter, but it was a nice surprise when it arrived.

Obviously one swallow doesn't make a summer, but in isolation, "Mind's Eye" suggests Wolfmother show promise. They're not as out there as some of the new starsailors such as Parisman and definitely not as crazed as the lunatic fringe likes of Dungen, but are potentially dark horses worth a flutter. Keep those betting slips to hand.
