Review: 'Yogi'
'Half-Pint Demigod'

-  Label: 'Wonky Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '2005'

Our Rating:
"Half-Pint Demigod" (http://www.wonky.net) will slam you against the wall and shake the brains out of your skull. And it's not a heavy-metal record, either. This remix album from Yogi offers a true alternative to mainstream rock - or even music in general. This isn't for wussies or the impatient.

The trip-hop beats and sputtering rhythms of "No More Evil (Glitch Mix)" recall Radiohead's recent forays into futuristic experimentalism. "There is no more hero in this world" is the theme here as the chilly, uneasy music creates a strong feeling of isolation.

On "You Fell (Arola Mix)," Yogi visits Nine Inch Nails territory, swimming in techno splashes until it explodes into vibrant metallic noise. That's actually among the record's highlights, when it bursts the speakers in half, filling it a wall of fuzz. To the headbangers among you, you will salute your half-pint demigod.

The disorienting "Bucket O' Damn 1" takes the listener further into the fevered vision of this challenging album and then crashing back into straighforward hard rock with "Truth (Memento Mix)," which is the kind of pounding noise that Ozzy Osbourne should be doing now.

Enter, but only if you are brave enough.
